Chuck Close and Scott Blake

Chuck Close is an American artist known for his photo realist portraits. He takes a photo and then superimposes a grid over it, and he has a grid over his canvas too. He goes grid by grid filling it in with paint to match the grid on the photograph. From up close each grid is its own like abstract painting, and then when viewed from a distance, the grids altogether turn into the portrait or either himself or one of his friends. I chose this self portrait he did of himself in 2015 because I liked the various colors that you wouldn't think to use when painting normally, and how they come together to form the face, I also like how uneven and kind of lopsided the paintings feels. Scott Blake is also an American painter, he is known for his work with barcodes to create portraits. This one I picked is his recreation of Madonna with barcodes. I like how he turned the barcodes for her lips red, it really makes it pop and grabs the attention of the viewer.
