Kaws--Untitled, 2016

Kaws is an American artist who used to work as an animator, but was also a graffiti artist. He often uses cartoon characters in his artwork, and the x's almost became his signature. I chose this untitled acrylic on shaped canvas as the artwork that I liked the most because of how different it is. Unlike traditional paintings, the canvas is in the shape of a dolphin, far different from the usual square/rectangle shapes. In addition, I like how what was painted on the canvas does not seem to follow the shape at all, almost as if he painted a larger canvas and then cut a piece of it out. The final thing that caught my eye was the placement of one of the x's over a circle where the dolphin's eye would be.
