Paul Gauguin- The House at Pan-du

http://www.sothebys.com/content/dam/stb/lots/N08/N08987/689N08987_6VV2P.jpg

I chose this painting because it reminds me of where I studied abroad- Granada, Spain.  I also like that the colors are different, the water is red not typical blue. Also I like that is it simple, but complex and you can see all the bumps in the mountain. It feels like a calm night and maybe a little windy because the trees look like they are moving.

Paul Gaugin- Jacob's fight with the angel

This painting is called"Jacob's fight with the Angel", I chose this photo because I really appreciated how rich the red color if in the paining, and I    can imagine that painting two people fighting is a difficult thing to depict. I like the angle that the women are watching the fight at, and the dimension you can see ass the women are further away. you can tell they are praying which is fitting to the situation of an angel being involved in a fight as a biblical scene. Jacob used a lot of newer techniques in this painting for the time of 1888.

The Painter of Sunflowers by Paul Gauguin

The above painting is by Paul Gauguin depicts Vincent Van Gogh.i chose this painting because I thought it was interesting that it depicts another painter in the process of painting a painting. I also chose it because Paul Gauguin was described to me as vincent Van Gogh's friend before he was described as a painter.

Night Cafe at Arles

Night Cafe at Arles is on oil on canvas by Paul Gauguin done in 1888. Gauguin visited by Vincent van Gough after his brother Theo had sent many requests. Once Gauguin arrived in Arles, he stayed with Vincent at a little cafe in Arles owned by the Ginoux couple. Gauguin was able to persuade Madame Ginoux to pose for a picture as well as her husband who was painted by Vincent. This painting was apart of the competition between van Gogh as he painted the interior and Gauguin painted this portrait.

When will you Marry?

When will you Marry is a painting by Paul Gaugin in 1892. It is an oil painting. I like this paintings because it shows two girls in traditional clothing.  I like the colors he choose for there clothing and how the background makes the painting pop. The back ground uses yellows, greens, and blues. I like how he painted the two women it looks very realistic.

Paul Gaugin - "Reclining Tahitian Women"

Paul Gauguin is best known as a painter, but he also made woodcarvings, sculptures, and prints. His artwork, "The Reclining Tahitian Women," was painted from 1848- 1903. It's a creative mix of differing tones and colors. The cool toned parts contrast pleasantly with the warm colors in the background of the painting. It's an alluring mix of sunlight and shadow surrounding a vivid snapshot of daily life.

Paul Gauguin: Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?

This painting is called Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?. It was created in 1897 - 1898. It was created in Tahiti and now resides in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. Gauguin wanted the painting to be read from right to left. There are 3 major figure groups that represent the questions in the title. The 3 women with the child represent the beginning of life, the middle group represents the daily existence of young adulthood, and the last group is an old woman approaching death. The blue idol in the background apparently represents what Gauguin described as "the beyond" Gauguin believed that this canvas surpassed all of his previous ones and he believed he would never do anything better, or anything like it.

Portrait of Madeleine Bernard by Paul Gauguin

Paul Gauguin was a post-Impressionist artist from France. He is known for his use of color. Portrait of Madeleine Bernard was painted in 1888 on a visit to Pont-Aven. Its an oil on canvas. This portrait really caught my attention because the female being depicted is being painted from one side. In which her face is profiled from the right. Another thing I like from the portrait was that Gauguin added that feminine touch to the portrait in which he shows Bernard is wearing make up. He give the lips a nice color.  Also, I like how Gauguin made the color blue to stand out in the portrait, but it does not take away from the female.

Woman with a Flower Paul Gauguin

Paul Gauguin painted Woman with a Flower or originally called Vahine No Te Tiarein in 1891. This is an oil on canvas. This portrait is of one of his neighbors and is one of the first paintings on Tahiti. He got the idea of this painting because of this woman came into his hut and looked at the paintings on the wall. While she was looking at the wall, he sketched out a drawing of her. Once she noticed that he was drawing she is left and came back with the blue dress on and a flower.

Paul Gauguin- self portrait

I like this painting because I admire the colors used and the contrast between the various shades. I really like how the colors are manipulated to portray the different shadows and highlights. The details convey and friendly and pleasant theme to the painting. I also like for there is a picture of himself next to himself as he is painting himself.

Paul Gauguin – Winter Landscape

This is an oil painting on canvas made in 1879. Paul Gauguin is a French post-impressionist painter. He is most known for his experimental use of color. I chose this painting because it is still inspired by the impressionist movement. The use of mostly monochromatic colors creates a nice contrast against the dark trees. However, even with most of the painting being monochromatic, there are still distinct forms and structures in the background. There is also a clear foreground, middle ground, and background.

Paul Gauguin Hail Mary

Image result for paul gauguin hail mary

Paul Gauguin painted the Hail Mary in 1891, which is also known La Orana Maria. The painting contains five people, Mary on the right with Jesus on her shoulders. On the left, it is thought to be a female angel known as Archangel Gabriel dressed in pink and with blue and yellow wings. Paul painted this after his move to Tahiti and it was his first painting he completed there.

Paul Gauguin Martinique Landscape

This painting is called the Martinique Landscape done by Paul Gauguin in 1887. I thought this was a beautiful picture, with all the rich and deep colors that he used. He also added texture, you can see the brush strokes, and not all of the paint lays flat. Gauguin steeped away from his impressionist style a little bit with this painting and I enjoy it.

Paul Gauguin--The Painter of Sunflowers

Paul Gauguin painted The Painter of Sunflowers in 1888 as an oil painting on canvas. This was a portrait of Vincent Van Gogh painting what is now what is considered to be one of his masterpieces. What drew me to the painting was that this is a portrait of a person, but he is not centered in the painting, but off to the side. In addition, Vincent is not what stands out in the painting, in terms of color choice, it is the sunflowers and the background.

Paul Gauguin: Landscape with Peacocks

This is "Landscape with Peacocks" by Paul Gauguin. It was made in 1892 with oil on canvas. I picked this because it is a bright and colorful landscape with all shades and highlights. The peacock in the corner is completely captured by the eye when first looking at it. It looks almost a like a magical Disney jungle child would want to be in.

paul gaugin- still life with three puppies

This painting was created by Paul Gaugin in 1888. The medium that he used to paint this was oil. I picked this painting originally because I thought the puppies were cute. I like how they are eating out of the frying pan instead of a bowl. Everything is placed on top of a table cloth. He also added fruit on the side of each cups. In the front of the table there are more fruit. I also like the pattern that is imprinted into the table cloth. It is very faint but you can still see it. I think that the perspective that he chose was kind of akward.

Paul Gauguin Te Fare (La maison)

Paul Gauguin created this painting titled Te Fare (La maison). He created this in the year 1892 and it is an oil on canvas painting. I chose this because of the colors he used. They are mostly the same shades and hues, but he managed to create such a beautiful image. I liked that he put so much detail into the trees and grass, but not that much detail into the people. It changes the perspective of things.

Paul Gauguin - Fatata te Miti (by the Sea)

Eugene Henri Paul Gauguin was a French post-impressionist artist. He has been recognized for his experimental use of color. This painting is called By the Sea. It is an oil painting that was finished in 1892 and it can be found in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. I chose this painting because of his creative use of color. I love the way the blues, purples, and oranges blend together. I also love the reflection of the trees in the water.

Paul Gauguin - Road in Tahiti

Paul Gauguin - Road in Tahiti
This is an oil on canvas painting by Paul Gauguin, made in 1891. Gauguin had a love for painting Tahiti in the French Polynesia. He had many paintings depicting the beautiful landscape and people of the islands. I really like these paintings of Tahiti because it shows how beautiful and tropical these islands are all the way across the world.

Michelangelo: The Creation of Adam

I chose the artist Michelangelo. My favorite types of paintings are religious paintings in churches because I find them beautiful to look up on when praying. Michelangelo's religious paintings are my favorite ones because I feel like they influenced all of western churches from there. This painting is in the sistine chapel painted in 1508-1512 out a fresco paint.

Andy Warhol

I    choose the artist Andy Warhol, because I'm a really big fan of his style of art. He goes with more of a Pop Art. I  choose this specific painting because this is a self portrait, but only half of his face which I think is a great idea since its different. I  was really drawn to this painting specifically because of the camp, and the way that Andy brought the camo onto his face and the precision was extremely noticeable especially on his hair. I  enjoyed the fact that he made his glasses very prominent, and didn't continue the design onto them.

The Meditative Rose - Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali is my favorite painter because he uses a lot of bright colors. He paints a lot of animal scenes and scenes of nature. This is one of my favorite paintings because it is very simple and calm. I like how there are minimal colors, which makes the rose really stand out. The background shows a desert like area with mountains in the back. His use of shadows help him to portray the depth of this background and keep an emphasis on the rose.

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol - Campbell's Soup Cans

My favorite artist/painter is Andy Warhol. He interests me because he creates a lot of unconventional, whimsical art that is very well known. Some of his famous works include pop art of celebrities, soup cans, and animals. This particular work shown above was painted in 1962, and it consists of 32 individual canvases of different Campbell's soup cans. His style consists of pop culture, advertising, as well as his own artistic expression. He became an inspiration for a lot of other different artists, such as in fashion design. Because of this, he is a very distinct artist whose work always stands out.

Monet

Nympheas, Les Nymphéas is an oil on canvas by Claude Monet. It is on permeant display at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. Monet was one of the founding impressionist and painted nearly 250 different water lillies and what he is most known for. After his wife passed away in 1911, he began painting on a larger scale, with the largest being 6 feet in height. These pieces depict water lilies Monet had gone on to plant in his backyard which he was very proud of.

A Starry Night Van Gogh

Van Gogh made this piece "A Starry Night". I personally do not have a favorite artist. But this is one of my favorite paintings. I really do like how this painting is almost abstract like. Abstract art is my favorite type of art. Van Gogh made the sky swirl into each other. I love looking at the sky. With the sky looking like its swirling into each other, it makes the stars look like they are twinkling. Then with the large black mountain in the front left. It compliments each other very well.

The Persistent of Memory- Dali

I really like this painting because it was one of the first ones that I learned about when I was a child, and the meaning has stuck with me. It was done by Salvador Dali in 1931. He titled it The Persistent of Memory. It is a great representation of a surrealist painting. You can see this by the metamorphosis in the clocks from the solid state to the liquid state. Also, the object in the middle is suppose to be a self portrait. I also learned that this painting is much smaller than I thought. It is about the size of a sheet of paper.

Frida Kahlo

This painting is called Henry Ford Hospital (the flying bed), and it is one of many painting done by Frida Kahlo. It was painted in 1932, and it represents her struggle through miscarriage and infertility. The painting depicts herself in the hospital bed having the miscarriage. Frida was desperate to have a son, represented by the fetus in the center, the other objects also represents things associated with childbirth and fertility. I like Frida Kahlo because she was not afraid to paint and represent womanly pain in a time when it was not talk about freely.

Girl with a Pearl Earring painted by Johannes Vermeer

I chose the above painting Girl with a Pearl Earring painted by Johannes Vermeer because the painting was at the center of a book I once read. the book that I read was a mystery that surrounded the history of the works of Vermeer. I was in middle school when I read this book for the first time, I went on to look up more information about Vermeer and his unique works. I learned that Vermeer had only painted a grand total of 34 confirmed works, a very low number for a famous artist. Vermeer's ability to paint natural light truly makes the subjects of his works come to life. vermeer is one of the neverlands famous painters of the dutch golden age of the 1600s. the way that the girl's clothing colors of blue and yellow complement one another against such a dark background are striking. Vermeer is one of my favorite painters.

Girl with a Pearl Earring

The Girl with a Pearl Earring is an oil on canvas painting made in 1665 by Johannes Vermeer. This painting is of a young girl with a dark background to focus all the attention on her. The Girl with a Pearl Earring is different from the rest of his works because the young girl is not doing a task instead she looking back at whoever is viewing the painting. This young girl looks like she is about to speak and has some mystery in her eyes.

Van Gogh

Starry night by Van Gogh is one of my favorite paintings. Van Gogh painted this from his asylum room one dark night. I love his use of impressionism. It makes the sky look like its coming to life. I love the dark look of the painting. The colors he used really set the tone for the entire painting. The village in the back also gives the painting more to look at.

Houses of Parliament- Monet

The "Houses of Parliament" was a series painted by Claude Monet. The series has 19 known paintings, all painted from the same perspective using oil paints. These artworks were done while Monet was in the St. Thomas Hospital, in London. The view of the Parliament buildings is the one he saw from his room. All of the 19 paintings were done at different times of day and in differing weather conditions. This particular painting is something of the baseline of the collection, as it has no name other than "Houses of Parliament, London," while some of the others have titles such as "Houses of Parliament in the Fog." The muted pastel tones and hazy outlines of the buildings lend an ethereal feeling to the painting. Monet's use of color is awe-inspiring- I almost can't believe what I'm seeing when I look at his paintings.

Georgia O'Keeffe

This is Georgia O'Keeffe's painting called Ram's Head, White Hollyhock-Hills. This was created in 1935 and it is an oil on canvas. She commented in 1976 that she said that, " My paintings sometimes grow by pieces from what is around." This is because she has painted and climbed the mountains in the paintings many times and that the flowers were planted among the vegetables in the garden. I like her as an artist because she has movement in her images. For example, she makes an static object like a Ram's Head have dimension.

Camille Pissarro--A Path in the Woods, Pontoise

Jacob-Abraham-Camille Pissarro was born in St. Thomas and lived in various places during his life. He studied under and was influenced by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Many of his early paintings were destroyed in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. His artwork is Impressionist, mostly landscapes. This painting is titled, A Path in the Woods, an oil on canvas painted in 1879. What drew me to this painting of his was how familiar it was to me. It looks as if I am walking in the woods in upstate New York. It is not a scene so different from what you could see in daily life. I like how at quick glance, it looks like a mess of color, but if you keep looking at it, you can see all of the details. In 1885-1890, Pissarro experimented with Neo-Impressionist ideas, but called it "romantic Impressionism" and called Pointillism "scientific Impressionism." He returned to painting pure Impressionism. He died in November 1903.

Thomas Kinkade (Robert Girrard) – The Cottage

This is a painting Thomas Kinkade made under the alias of Robert Girrard. Kinkade experimented with style and subject matter for six years under the name Girrard. During this time, he used techniques of French Impressionists – such as Monet, Manet, and Renoir. I did not know Kinkade had done this and was excited when I found out because Impressionism is my favorite style of art. Similarly, Monet is one of my favorite artists! I chose this particular painting because the subject matter is the same as in most of the paintings Kinkade is known for, yet, the style is completely different. You can clearly see his experimentation with his brushstrokes and the inspiration he drew from impressionism.
