Vincent Van Gogh – Still Life with Glass of Absinthe and a Carafe

This painting was made in 1887; it currently resides in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The painting is oil on canvas. A technique called peinture a l’essence, very thinned oil paint applied with thin brushes, was used to create this painting resulting in a painting that looks almost like a watercolor painting. Van Gogh made this while he was in Paris; absinthe was a popular drink there. I love how he was able to capture the appearance of the glass in the vase, cup, and windows. It is a very beautiful painting with subtle colors due to the painting technique he used.
