April Gornik

This painting is "Approaching the Night" by April Gornik. I chose this painting because in my opinion, the painting really captures the moment at hand that April saw. Clouds change very quickly, and the fact that she was able to capture the shape of the clouds at that very moment shows the capability of the artist. the way that the sun set is coloring the clouds is extremely realistic as well and I feel as if Im looking at this scene myself, and I feel the serenity of the mountains and setting of where the artist is.

Stepped Waterfall

April Gornikcrated created this painting in 1998, out of prints and multiples, color direct gravure with spit bite aquatint. Gornikcrated mostly paints landscapes that she can be in. She also, makes them artificial to take position over them. I picked this painting because I thought it was a little different from the rest of her paintings. In addition, I picked this painting because this painting is not your typle waterfall painting she doesn't have a huge amount of water running down. She paints a clam waterfall that people would want to sit next to and relax.

Light Through the Forest

The above painting is Light Through the Forest painted on linen with oil paint in 1999 by April Gornik. April Gornik was born in Cleveland, Ohio in the year 1953 she grew up to become a very skilled painter of American landscapes. I chose this painting because it reminds me of my backyard (17 acres of pure woods). The lights peeking through the canopy of the trees is a comforting sight, as it is filtered down into grassy underbrush. The way she captured the pure essence of the scene is impressive and beautiful.

The Woods: April Gornik

This print is called "The Woods" and was made in 2009. I really liked this print because it gives off an eerie feeling. The technique used to showcase the light coming through the trees is amazing. April Gornik is an American artist and paints American landscapes. All of her work is realist but also dreamlike. Her paintings and drawings arevery good at filling the views with an emotional response.

The Fall by April Gornik

April Gornik is an american painter that paints american landscapes. Her paintings are realistic but have a dreamlike quality to them. Her paintings and drawings embody oppositions and speak to America's historically conflicted relationship with nature. This painting is called The Fall by April Gornik. It is an oil on linen painting created in 2001. I picked it because of the deep rich colors. It almost looks like a storm is coming. I also thought it was a little different from some of her other stuff I saw, color wise.

April Gornick, Rising Moon

This painting is titled Rising Moon and it was painted by April Gornick in 1991. She painted it she was thinking about the beautiful night skies she sees especially when she was in the Caribbean vacationing. She says this was one of the paintings that pushed her to her edge to see what she was capable of. I liked that it was outside the norm of what she typically does and also what is typically seen in landscape paintings. I picked it because I think the contrast with the lights and the darks are very visually appealing. It is also a beautiful painting only using whites, blacks, blue and yellow. It's simple but very elaborate all at the same time.

April Gornik Radiant Passage

April Gornik is a New York painter who paints landscapes. Her paintings of nature are very realistic. This paining of a lake looks real. She depicted the reflection of the clouds in the lake so well. It makes it really come to life. Most of her paintings are like this making each one look so real.

April Gornik--Snowfall

This painting, called Snowfall, was made my April Gornik in 2014, which is the most recent out of all of the painters we have covered so far. This painting is oil paint on linen. I chose this painting because I was very intrigued about the colors used. It is obviously a painting of the snow, but is not predominantly white, grey, and blue, like many paintings of snow are. I also really liked the difference of the trees that are closer to the artist versus the ones that are farther away. The painting looks very three-dimensional because of this.

April Gornik - Sea Edge

This painting was created in 2010. I picked this picture because I thought the waves in the water was really detailed. I think that its really hard to capture that in a painting. Its not something that's easy to do. She did a really good job of putting intricit details in the image. You can see the high waves that are really high in the background. I also like the white that she incorporated into the water.

Red Canyon

This painting by April Gornik conveys the colors, depth, and intensity of the canyons with such beauty and detail. I admire the colors and the shadows. Though this painting may look simple it is difficult to achieve the variations of the shades used. I love the different shades of browns and reds in contrast to the sky. You can almost feel the heat radiating from the painting.

Spring Light and still water

April Gornik's artwork consists of landscapes and she states that nature is the fundamental of her spiritual being. She was questioned if her art was suppose to be a statement about climate change and she said to use her art for whatever good it is to the earth. This painting is called "Spring light and still water" and i think it differs vastly from her paintings that I come across because of her use of the greens and yellows. She also managed to perfectly position the reflections in the water and still keeps the color composition the same.

Mirrored Trees by April Gornik

Gornik is known for her American landscapes. She creates realistic pieces with a dreamlike quality. Mirrored Trees was created in 2000. Its an oil on linen painting. I choose this painting because I like the use of light and colors. As I looked through her paintings, I saw how she use reflection(mirroring) a lot. She is very good at this technique making everything symmetrical.  I like that in the painting you can tell apart the sky from the water.

April Gornik - Approaching Night

Approaching Night - April Gornik

April Gornik painted this in 2001. It is oil on linen. I chose this painting because it depicts a sunset which is so naturally beautiful. She captures the vivid colors of a sunset. She blends the colors smoothly, which is needed to depict an ombre sunset. Although she names it "Approaching Night," which sounds very dark, the painting itself is very bright and uplifting. Gornik's paintings are mainly of nature, with a focus on clouds. Her paintings, such as this one, are very realistic and seem like photographs at first glance.

April Gornik - Blue Day, Blue Night

This is a painting done by April Gornik with oil on linen. April Gornik is an American artist who paints American landscapes. I like this piece because it is similar to what I am working on with my watercolor. This painting is so beautiful and realistic, it looks like you are looking at a photo. I love that it is very simple with minimal colors and extreme detail in the clouds.

April Gornik - Green Shade

April Gornik is a contemporary artist that paints landscapes. She is known for her realistic artwork that has a dreamlike quality. Her painting, Green Shade, was made in 2012. This painting is oil on linen and is 72 inches by 108 inches. I chose this painting simply because it is stunning. It is a giant painting filled with so much detail. There are so many trees, leaves, and shades of green that make this painting come alive. I love how she shows the sunlight coming through the leaves and shining on the forest floor. The painting looks so realistic, yet like a scene from a fairytale at the same time; which is what she is known for.

April Gornik

This piece is called "Radiant Light". She made this painting in 2001. April is known for her landscape paintings of cloud formations. I really like how this piece is different than his normal pieces. There is barely no clouds in it. It shows dark trees in the forest, showing the sunlight radiant through the back of the trees. This painting truly is breath taking. I love the sun radiating through the trees, shining the sunlight on the trees' leaves. It is just so realistic and feels as if I am there.

Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake is an Oil on Linen 74"x92" painting made by April Gornik in 1999. April Gornik is an American who was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1953 and now lives in Long Island, New York. This Painting uses the colors of reds, blues and browns to give an image of the sky reflecting upon deep waters. I chose this painting because of the strong reflection of the pink clouds mixing with the dark waters making it turn into a dark plum shade. I enjoy how fluffy and light the clouds look in the sky which shows proper atmospheric shading as it goes higher to the sky.

April Gornik- Big Storm Light

April Gornik is a modern artist best know for her landscapes. The painting I chose particularly displays her fascination with storms, something else she is known for. After briefly reviewing her portfolio, it is obvious that she enjoys recreating scenes which occur either directly before or directly after a storm. My chosen painting, "Big Storm Light," is an entrancing picture of what is either a brewing tempest or one that has just blown over. The top of the painting has dark, brooding clouds  backlit by the sun. The dark tones are offset by the warm, hazy light and soft clouds towards the bottom of the picture. Gornik's subject matter is complemented by the rich tones of her chosen medium of oil paint.

April Gornik Light After the Storm

April Gornik created this piece in 2012 and it is called Light After the Storm. It is an oil on linen painting and it is a striking yet calming image. I really like the color choices she used especially on the waves that are crashing on the shore. I picked this painting because I thought it was similar to the atmospheric perspective we talked about in class and because of how realistic it is.

Light Before Heat

Light before heat by April Gornik is an oil on canvas. The painting depicts a pink and blue sky reflected in a body of water that is intersected by a green peninsula. Gornik pants landscapes throughout America and is passionate about nature which is why she incorporates it into her work.  The painting was done in New Haven in 1984 and is now owned by the Parish Museum in Water Mill, New York.

Christ in the Storm of the Sea of Gailee

Rembrandt did this painting in 1633. He did it to describe the gospel of Mark from the bible. I found it interesting that this is his only seascape painting. Also, as a criminology major I found the history of this painting of it being stolen and never recovered super interesting. From an art standpoint I think it is very dramatic and the lights and darks tell an impactful story.

This is the Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp that was painted in 1632. In that century of Holland, only one public anatomy lesson was performed on a body of the executed criminal. The reason I choose this picture is because the first thing I noticed was that three of the people observing have the same general face with the mustache. The focal point of this painting is the arm without any skin.

Rembrandt

This piece is called "Jacob wrestling with the angel". The idea behind this painting is from a story of the Old Testament. This shows Jacob actually wrestling with an angel. They say the story behind this painting is talking about the struggle in a person's heart between selfishness, and higher ideals. Jacob represents the selfishness. Due to his past of doing anything possible to get his way. The angel represents the higher ideals. Due to the relationship with angels and being the good of all goods. I like this painting because well it is a gorgeous painting, and I look paintings of angels. But I really do love the meaning behind it.

The Night Watch

Miltia Company of District II under the command of Captain Fran Bannick Cocq, commonly known as the The Night Watch, was painted in 1642 by Rembrandt van Rijn. The painting is known for it’s size, the use of light and the perception of motion. The painting is 12.5 by 15 feet wide and weights 743 lbs. The portrait is of civivc guards mens who’s purpose was to defend the city The light depicts the three most important figures in the painting, a captain, a Lieutenant and a golden girl who appears behind a musketeer. This painting differs from some of Rembrant’s other works as the characters all have specific actions and are quite animated. The painting is currently on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam where it is currently undergoing a live restoration that is expected to take about a year to complete.

The storm on the Sea of Galilee

Rembrandt was a Dutch painter and printmaker. Rembrandt had a wide verity of art work ranging form self portraits, to portraits to even landscapes. This art came from a period of great wealth. This period is known as the Dutch Golden age.  This painting remains missing, as it was stolen and it unfound. The museum has the painting empty frames still on display.

Lucretia - Rembrant art work

Lucretia was painted by Rembrant in 1666. He painted this during the Dutch Golden Age. He uses oil painting in this portrait. I picked this portrait because I like the colors he chose to capture the image. I like the golden colors on her dress. I also like the golden necklace that she is wearing. She has a dagger in her right hand, she has just taken it out of herself. There is blood that is seeping into her dress. Lucretia is a ancient Greek character who killed herself after being raped by an Etruscan King. Her face looks lifeless as if she can't feel anything anymore.

The Standard Bearer

I like this painting because of the intense attention to detail and how nicely the colors complement each other. The flag, the plume in the hat, and the sword-belt are beautifully embellished in gold and indicate the figure’s important civic duties. Rembrandt conveys a strong sense of character through intense details in the vigorously modeled face, the thick hair, and costume details.

The Holy Family by Night

the above painting is called "The Holy Family by Night" it was painted by Rembrandt who was capable of depicting such peaceful intimacy with only a few touches. I chose this work because I liked the shadows. the painting is supposed to depict Mary and her mother Anne next to the Christ Child. joeseph is also in the painting but he is crouched under the staircase where he is something to drink from a barrel. marry reads a book as her mother Anne sleeps. I really liked the way the room looks with so many small details coming together to form a full picture.

The Spectacles Seller

Rembrandt is one of the most famous Dutch painters. When he was 14, his parents put him into Leiden University. After college, Rembrandt trained with Jacob Van Swanenburgh for four years. One of this first works of art was " The Spectacles Seller". Rembrandt uses oil paint to create this painting. This painting is one of five in a series. The series is suppose to represent the five senses, this painting represents sight. He made this painting around the age of seventeen. Rembrandt uses a strong contrast of light and shade in this painting. In this painting, he paints an elderly couple buying a pair of glasses.

Rembrandt- Woman with a Pink

Rembrandt is usually regarded as the the greatest artist of Hollands golden age. Rembrandt did intense studies of people, objects and their surroundings, as is evident in his work. His portraits are so life life and detailed. I picked this painting because I liked the look of the woman with her jewels across her head, and the pink carnation in her hand.

Rembrandt - Young Children

This image is called "Young Children " by the artist Rembrandt, who was famous for his biblical style paintings, and use of water color art. I  choose this image because it shows God, and all young children going to him. At the time of this painting, there was a large tuberculosis breakout, and many children including 3 of Rembrandt's own passed away early in life, and often did not see past infancy. This picture moved me, as it seems the families are saying good bye, and the lord is saying welcome to the young children.

Rembrandt Self-Portrait

Self-Portrait by Rembrandt
Rembrandt painted this self-portrait in 1660. Rembrandt was 54 years old at this time. Many interpret the artist as anxious and worried, as this time was difficult for him. He was going into debt. The anxiety is seen in his raised eyebrows and wrinkles. Others see this self-portrait as a depiction of his aging. I chose this painting because it is probably very hard to paint a self-portrait so accurately, and how it shows the painter's emotions. This painting is currently displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Rembrandt - Christ on the Cross

Rembrandt created Christ on the Cross in 1631. Rembrandt is known for his realism. Many of his painting are portraits known for the subject’s facial expression and the emotion conveyed. Rembrandt is also known for his use of light and shade. Much of Rembrandt’s work is biblically based. I chose this painting, which is oil on canvas mounted on a panel, because of the uniqueness of it. Many artists have created this image of Jesus’ crucifixion and almost everyone has seen this scene depicted. However, this rendition of it is definitely unique to me, and it is because Rembrandt’s distinctive style is evident. The expression on Christ’s face is unlike any I have seen depicted before; it shows agony and determination as He looks up towards the heavens. Rembrandt’s use of light is also very strong in this painting. Jesus seems to have a spotlight on Him creating stark contrast to the black abyss behind Him.

Rembrandt The Stone Bridge

Rembrandt created this painting titled, The Stone Bridge around 1638. The Stone Bridge is different than his other paintings. It is different in the way that he usually only painted portraits. It is one of the only Dutch landscapes Rembrandt painted. It is literally the calm before the storm and I like how realistic the sky looks and how the people were rowing back to shore. I also like the color contrast he used to portray the approaching storm.

Rembrandt: The Storm on the Sea of Galilee

This painting is called The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, it was created in 1633. This painting was kept in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston until it was stolen in 1990. It has never been found. This is the only seascape created by Rembrandt and it is supposed to depict the miracle of jesus calming the storm. This scene is decribed in the fourth chapter of the Gospel of Mark.

Rembrandt- Bust of an Old Man in a Fur Cap

Rembrandt was an artist famous for his masterful ability to convey, within his paintings, the essence of a person. He painted people without their usual layer of artifice, revealing to the world the person under the mask. In this painting, titled "Bust of an Old Man in a Fur Cap," Rembrandt's trademark golden glow is apparent. An understated light shines from behind the model, highlighting one side of his face and casting the opposite side in shadow. Rembrandt's skill is apparent in the dual nature he gives to the face of his model. The man seems to be exhausted yet defiant; judging yet vulnerable. Rembrandt's use of light and dark in the man's clothing, as well as the background, further lends itself to the idea of a dual nature.

Flora--Rembrandt

Rembrandt painted this oil painting in 1634 of his wife as the Roman goddess, Flora. This painting is in Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Flora is the goddess of spring and flowers, as well as fertility and youth. Rembrandt painted two other portraits of her as well. I chose this painting because of how beautiful of a portrait this is. In his other portraits, Rembrandt is very realistic in showing the person's features, especially wrinkles, and in this one, his wife does not seem to have these same imperfections. In addition, the way the woman's clothing was painted drew me in; I felt like I could almost touch it.

Bathsheba at her Bath: Rembrant

This is Bathsheba at her bath by Rembrant, created in 1684. It is currently held in the Louvre Museum and is made of Oil Paint on Canvas. In the painting a elderly woman is washing the feet of Bathsheba, who is holding a letter from King David. King David had seen her bathing and falls in love with her and sends her a letter before killing her husband in battle. I enjoy this painting and believe it to be from the perspective of King David who views Bathsheba in a lustful manner, thus why Bathsheba is the focus and most tinted piece in the painting while the background is full of shadows such as the elderly handmaid. Bathsheba is painted with sexual energy but also a sadness casted on her face giving away the mixed emotions surrounding her situation.

The Return of the Prodigal Son by Rembrandt

As seen in the documentary Rembrandt is admired for his realistic depiction of the human. Also known for his great use of light and shadows in his paintings. Rembrandt is an important artist in Dutch art history since he contributed new styles and subject matters. The return of the Prodigal son is an oil painting and one of the last works Rembrandt worked on after his death. This painting depicts the Biblical story of the Prodigal Son.  I choose this painting because I like the emotion being depicted and how the light is shined upon the son. The son has come back home asking for forgiveness and is received with open arms.

The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, 1632, Rembrandt

Rembrandt was a Dutch painter and was considered one of the most important in Dutch art history. This painting is one of his earliest pieces. It depicts a corpse of a criminal who was convicted for armed robbery and was sentenced to death by hanging. I like this painting because you can see each persons' different reaction to what is being shown. There are also a lot of different shadows that make the piece come together.

Edward Hopper

Coast Guard Cove is a watercolor and pencil on paper by Edward Hopper in 1927. This was the year that he purchased his first car so his paintings at the time were influenced by his freedom to travel to the coast of Maine. This summer was the first time he began painting in water color with the encouragement of his wife. Using the water colors allowed him to have more freedom in contrast to his previous oil paintings. In Coast Guard Cove, he is able to capture the sunlight and the shadows below the cliffs.

House by the Railroad (1925)- Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper was an American realist painter. He is known best for his oil paintings, such as this one, House by the Railroad. I like this painting because of the contrast between light and dark. By only looking at the left side of the house, it looks normal. Looking at the painting as a whole, you can see that it was painted to look very ominous. Many people compare this painting to a haunted house. This house was painted as the only one in the area, and this aspect makes it even more ominous. It creates suspense about what is on the other side of the railroad.

Edward Hopper Watercolor

Edward Hopper was an artist best known for his masterful use of watercolors in the 1920's. He used light washes of color to suggest the sunkissed shores of his favorite subject to paint- Cape Ann, Massachusetts. This painting in particular, titled "House at Riverdale," showcases his talent for creating a striking contrast between sunlight and shadow. The blue tones placed in the shadows of the house are offset by the warm yellow of the sand dunes in the background. This is by far one of my favorite works of Hopper; I find the scene compelling in its relative simplicity.

Cottages at North Truro by Edward Hopper

The above painting entitled Cottages at North Truro by Edward Hopper was painted in the town it was named for North Truro, in the year 1938. born July 22, 1882, in Nyack, New York, and he died May 15, 1967. during his life, Edward Hopper painted many works. I chose this one because I liked the way it depicts train tracks by what appears to be a dirt road. despite his beautiful skills with watercolors Hopper is very well known for his work with oil paint. while looking for a water colorwork I realized I had seen his oil paintwork before.

Edward Hopper-Windy Day

Edward Hopper is known to be one of the most important realist painters of twentieth century America. He chose to paint mostly empty cityscapes, landscapes and isolated figures. Hopper's most famous piece is called Nighthawks and is owned by the Chicago institute of Art. Some of Hoppers earliest watercolors are inspired by Cape Elizabeth in Maine. He took various trips there between the years 1923 and 1927, during that time he created this titled Windy Day.

Edward Hopper- Nighthawks

Edward Hopper is a famous painter. The painting shown above is titled "Nighthawks" and was painted in 1942. As you can see, this painting depicts people sitting in a restaurant late at night. The picture is taken from the outside, looking into the restaurant. I really like this painting because it tells a story without a lot happening. The brighter colors on the inside really contrast with the darker colors on the outside. The glass is clear, but you can tell that its two separate locations and different things happening.

Roofs of the Cobb Barn--Edward Hopper

This watercolor is Roofs on the Cobb Barn, painted by Edward Hopper in 1931. His paintings were based off of what he saw in the Northeast. Here, he is in Cape Cod. In this painting, the contrast between the rigid lines of the building and the flowing mountain landscape is intriguing. Many of his paintings are solely buildings, but the mountains in the background are what drew me to this painting. In addition, the painting is very simple, but is not lacking in detail.

coast guard boat

I admire this painting by Edward Hopper because of the details and the colors used. Hopper once stated, "To me the most important thing is the sense of going on,” he once articulated of his peripatetic impulse.” “You know how beautiful things are when you’re travelling” (Gail Levin, Hopper’s Places, Berkeley, California, 1998, p. 8)." I find this quote interesting because often times when we travel, we don't really stop to embrace everything. These paintings encompass the beauty of travelling and the wonders of nature that we sometimes take for granted.

Edward Hopper Watercolor

October on Cape is an autumn scene by Edward Hopper. Edward hopper was born in New York in 1882. Hoppers painting where mostly rural and urban scene. He painted a lot of houses and out door scenery. In this painting you can see that he want to capture the feeling of the seasons. He painted a lot of house along on the cape.

Rain on River

Edward Hopper was an American realist painter and paintmaker. He is known as the most important realist painter in the twentieth century in America.  Edward Hopper created Rain on water in 1938. To create this painting he use pencil and water color. This painting is base off a river in South Royalton, Vermont. Rain on River is related to the White River series created in the summers of 1937 and 1938.
