Boy with a Pipe

Unlike Picasso's other Rose Era paintings that focused on the many outcasts of society, this painting portrays teenage beauty. The boy's features and outfit are odd yet harmonious to the background. The addition of a crown of roses gives the painting more depth and expression of the character's mysteriousness. Picasso decided to position the boy sitting down and spent much time on the height and angle of the model. The character's pose being slightly off-center, his disinterest in his surroundings and the brightly colored flowers are not at all smooth-flowing but represent a lightness in the darkness that may never be truly understood.
