The Night Watch


Miltia Company of District II under the command of Captain Fran Bannick Cocq, commonly known as the The Night Watch, was painted in 1642 by Rembrandt van Rijn. The painting is known for it’s size, the use of light and the perception of motion. The painting is 12.5 by 15 feet wide and weights 743 lbs. The portrait is of civivc guards mens who’s purpose was to defend the city The light depicts the three most important figures in the painting, a captain, a Lieutenant and a golden girl who appears behind a musketeer. This painting differs from some of Rembrant’s other works as the characters all have specific actions and are quite animated. The painting is currently on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam where it is currently undergoing a live restoration that is expected to take about a year to complete.
