House by the Railroad (1925)- Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper was an American realist painter. He is known best for his oil paintings, such as this one, House by the Railroad. I like this painting because of the contrast between light and dark. By only looking at the left side of the house, it looks normal. Looking at the painting as a whole, you can see that it was painted to look very ominous. Many people compare this painting to a haunted house. This house was painted as the only one in the area, and this aspect makes it even more ominous. It creates suspense about what is on the other side of the railroad.
